Why some questions are harder

Three shapes of question

None of these questions comes with a story, so the cards carry the whole reading. What changes the difficulty is how much the question itself gives you to hold on to.

Beginner · 22 questions

Choice question

The answer space is given (this or that). Your job is to weigh the cards against each side.

Intermediate · 149 questions

Situated question

The topic is named but the answer is open. You decide what the cards are pointing at.

Advanced · 29 questions

Open question

No topic, no sides. Read card-first and hand the seeker a frame they can use.

Using these questions with your own deck

The questions work just as well on a table as on a screen. A routine that builds skill quickly:

  1. Pick a question you would not ask for yourself. Reading for an imagined seeker keeps you honest; reading for yourself tempts you to read what you hope for.
  2. Say the question out loud, then draw three cards — Past · Present · Future for “how did this form and where is it going”, Situation · Action · Outcome for “what should I do”.
  3. Read the middle card first, then the other two in relation to it. A spread is one answer, not three meanings.
  4. Write the reading in five sentences, addressed to the seeker, before you look anything up.
  5. Then check yourself. Which card did you lean on? Which did you skip? Did you answer the question they asked, or the one you wished they had asked?

That last step is the hard part to do alone, which is what the on-screen version is for: draw the same question here and the feedback names what you leaned on and what you skipped.

Questions about practice questions

What are good tarot practice questions?
Good practice questions are open enough that the cards have to do the work, and specific enough to be answerable: "What do I need to know about this job offer?" rather than "Will I get the job?". Every question on this page is written that way — one line, plainly asked, with no hint of which card it wants.
How do I practise tarot with these questions?
Pick a question (or let the page shuffle one for you), draw three cards, and write the reading as if the person who asked were sitting across from you. On this site the cards are dealt for you and your reading is reviewed for feedback; with your own deck, pull the cards and write the reading in a journal, then compare it to what you would say a week later.
What makes a tarot practice question easy or hard?
Mostly its shape. A choice question ("Should I stay, or go?") hands you the answer space, so you weigh the cards against two sides. A situated question names the topic but leaves the answer open. An open question ("What do I need to know right now?") gives you nothing but the cards. The questions here are labelled by that structure so you can work up from choice to open.
Can I practise tarot reading without a deck?
Yes. Each question on this page deals three cards on screen and opens a practice reading where you write your interpretation and get feedback. If you do have a deck, use the same questions with your physical cards.
Are these questions free to use?
Yes. The list is free to read and use however you like. Your first practice reading with feedback is free without an account; a free account unlocks more, and a subscription removes the limit.
Should I practise on questions about other people?
These questions are all first-person on purpose: the seeker asks about their own life. Reading about someone who is not present is its own skill with its own ethics; there is a dedicated practice story for it in the scenarios section.
